FAIPG Lecturers of Djuanda University Conduct Community Service for the Indonesian Diaspora in Malaysia

Last Updated: 4 months ago

The Community Service (PKM) activity conducted by lecturers of the Elementary School Teacher Education Study Program (PGSD), Faculty of Islamic Studies and Teacher Education (FAIPG), Djuanda University, was held on January 30, 2026, in Ampang, Selangor, Malaysia. This activity represents the implementation of the Tridarma of Higher Education while also strengthening international cooperation between Djuanda University, the ASEAN Academic Association (ASEANACA), and the Indonesian Anak Rantau Community in Malaysia.

This PKM activity took place over one full day and night and was designed in an integrated manner, emphasizing educational, social, and economic empowerment aspects of the community. The main focus of the activity was mentoring community members regarding the direction and sustainability of education for their children who reside in Malaysia, particularly in facing the dynamics of cross-border education and differences in socio-cultural contexts.

In this activity, the PKM lecturer team was led by Dr. Helmia Tasti Adri, M.Pd.Si from the PGSD program, with members Muhammad Amin, M.Si from Islamic Economics, Maya Apriana, M.Si from Islamic Banking (PBS), and Muhammad Kafnun Kafi, M.Pd.I from the Islamic Education (PAI) program. The team had the opportunity to assist approximately seven heads of families who are members of the Indonesian Anak Rantau Community in Malaysia. The assisted community members came from diverse regional backgrounds, consisting of four families from Java, one family from Kalimantan, and two families from Sumatra. This diversity enriched the discussions and broadened perspectives in addressing the educational issues and needs of children in a migrant environment.

The series of activities were formally conducted from morning to afternoon through educational mentoring sessions, focused discussions, and experience sharing from community members. In this session, the lecturer team provided guidance on children’s educational planning, the strategic role of families in basic education, and the importance of educational continuity for children of Indonesian descent living abroad. Community members were also given the opportunity to share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations, creating a participatory and solution-oriented two-way dialogue.

In addition to educational mentoring, this PKM activity was complemented by an exhibition of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) managed by members of the Anak Rantau community. The exhibition served as a means of appreciating the community’s creativity and economic independence, as well as a platform to promote their flagship products with development potential. During this session, the PKM team also provided simple economic mentoring, particularly related to strengthening community-based businesses and increasing the added value of their products.

The activity continued from the afternoon until the evening with a more informal sharing session and a friendly gathering. This session was used to strengthen relationships between the lecturer team, cooperation partners, and community members, as well as to foster a sense of togetherness and solidarity. The warm and familial atmosphere complemented the formal activities carried out earlier, making the overall event harmonious and meaningful.

Through this Community Service activity, it is hoped that sustainable cooperation will be established between Djuanda University, ASEANACA, and the Indonesian diaspora community in Malaysia, while also creating a tangible contribution from higher education institutions in supporting the improvement of educational quality and community welfare, particularly for the Indonesian Anak Rantau Community in Ampang, Selangor.
