Socialization of Household Waste Sorting and Processing: UNIDA FAIPG KKN Students Encourage the Community to Protect the Environment

Last Updated: 9 months ago

Students of the Community Service Program (KKN) of the Faculty of Islamic Religion and Teacher Education (FAIPG) of Djuanda University (UNIDA) Group 6 of Tajur Halang Village, held a socialization on Preventing Household Waste Sorting and Processing with the theme of Creating a Clean and Healthy Environment Through Household Waste Management. Tajurhalang Village, Cijeruk District, has significant potential for environmental management due to its strong culture of mutual cooperation and abundant natural resources. However, population growth and changes in household consumption patterns have resulted in increased waste volume, particularly organic kitchen waste. Most household waste is still a mixture of organic and inorganic waste, complicating processing and potentially causing environmental pollution, unpleasant odors, and becoming a source of disease.

Waste management starting at home, particularly with the principles of sorting (separating waste according to type) and processing (converting organic waste into compost or useful products), is a strategic step to reduce the burden on landfills (TPA) while increasing public environmental awareness. This outreach is crucial to provide understanding, skills, and motivation to Tajurhalang Village residents so they can implement independent and sustainable kitchen waste management.

The objectives of this activity are: 1) To increase public awareness of the importance of wise kitchen waste management to maintain environmental cleanliness. 2) To reduce the volume of waste disposed of at the TPS/TPA through processing at the source. 3) To build an environmentally friendly culture in Tajurhalang Village through household waste sorting. 4) To improve the quality of life and well-being.

In his remarks, Apud Ardiansah, S.E, as the Head of Tajur Halang Village, said that household waste is a daily problem that we often consider trivial, even though if it is not managed properly it can cause serious problems for health and the environment.

"Household waste is a daily issue that we often take for granted, but if not managed properly, it can cause serious health and environmental problems. Therefore, I truly appreciate the initiative of the Community Service Program students who have presented this outreach activity. I also urge all residents to support this activity, not only by attending today but also by applying the knowledge we gain in our daily lives," he said.

Hindun, as the head of the PKK Mothers, said that rubbish does not always have to be thrown away, but can be sorted and even processed into something more useful.

"In our opinion, as members of the community who participated in the Prevent, Sort, and Process Household Waste Socialization activity, this event went well and was beneficial. The presentation by the KKN students was easy to understand, especially with the accompanying real-life examples and simple practices that can be immediately implemented at home. We feel this activity opens up new insights, that waste does not always have to be thrown away, but can be sorted and even processed into something more useful. The atmosphere of the activity was also quite enjoyable because there was two-way interaction between the presenters and participants. We hope that activities like this can continue to be held, so that the community becomes more aware of the importance of maintaining a clean environment, and in the future our village can be healthier, more beautiful, and free from waste problems," he said.

The expected output is growing awareness and changes in community behavior in managing waste starting from home, through the habit of preventing waste generation, sorting organic and inorganic waste, and processing waste to make it more useful.
