The FAIPG Research Team of Djuanda University (UNIDA) heldFocus Group Discussion (FGD)with the theme"Online Gambling Mitigation Strategy for High School Students through the SEDLF Approach"(28/08/2025).
The development of digital technology has brought various positive impacts to education. However, it has also given rise to new risks, one of which is the rise of online gambling practices disguised as digital games and applications. This phenomenon poses a serious challenge to education, particularly as it involves high school students who are still at a vulnerable stage of psychosocial development.
The research, currently being conducted by a team from Djuanda University, entitled "Online Gambling Mitigation Strategies for Middle-Class Students Using the Socio-Ecological Digital Literacy Framework (SEDLF)," utilizes a multidimensional approach that incorporates critical digital literacy, the social environment, and educational policy regulations. To deepen and validate the initial findings and develop implementable recommendations, cross-disciplinary discussions through focus group discussions (FGDs) are needed.
The objectives of this activity are to explore the interim results of research on student involvement in risky digital practices, to obtain conceptual and practical input from experts across fields, to formulate applicable online gambling mitigation strategies for schools, teachers, and parents, and to compile input for the development of modules and recommendations for digital literacy-based education policies.
This activity began with the presentation of research results byChief Investigator, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zahra Khusnul Lathifah, M.Pd.I., M.C.E.which presents field findings related to the increasing trend of online gambling among students, influencing factors, and the potential for interventions based on the SEDLF approach (Social, Emotional, Digital Literacy, and Family).
After that, the event continued with a session presenting material from expert speakers, namely:Faisal Sundani Kamaludin, Lc., M.Ed., Ph.D., as an Education Expert from Al Azhar University Indonesia, Dr. Intan Savitri, M.Psi. as an Adolescent Psychologist from Mercu Buana University, and Dr.rer.nat Avinanta Tarigan as a Cyber Security Expert from Gunadarma University
The speakers provided perspectives from educational, psychological, and technological and social perspectives in designing strategies for preventing and addressing the impact of online gambling among high school students.
This interactive discussion is expected to be the first step in formulating a comprehensive strategy that can be implemented by schools, families, and the wider community to build resilience in the younger generation against the dangers of online gambling.
It is hoped that through this FGD, the SEDLF-based online gambling mitigation strategy can be strengthened with input from experts, as well as opening up wider collaboration space between academics, education practitioners, and the community in building a healthy digital ecosystem for the younger generation
